Airmail Art Project #2

So after completing our first Airmail Art Project, Mary Ann asked not to start with something so finished for our second project. So I thought, OK, I will put a minimum of a few pencil drawn lines or shapes on card stock and send them off.

Here is what I sent on 2/12/21 (sorry about the difference in color in the images below – I used pencil on 100 brightness cardstock):

and here is what I got back from Mary Ann (undated MAL)

Wow, I can see I have to get more consistent lighting…but you get the general idea of what Mary Ann added. As of this point, the four blocks piece is more interesting to me.

and here is what I sent back to Mary Ann (undated DG)

At this point, I was really struggling with what to add. I liked the four block piece a lot better than the curved lines piece…so I copied Mary Ann’s work and made two continuing pieces of the curved lines…one original and one copy with added media.

So now Mary Ann had three pieces to work with.

and here is what I got back from Mary Ann (dated 3/10/21 MAL). The mail is very erratic between Raleigh and Dallas.

The first piece of three that we had in progress.

I really liked this as is, so I declared it finished.

The other two pieces she sent were:

I was beginning to warm to the piece with “ghosts”…but I wasn’t sure where to go with the second piece with more abstract lines. I couldn’t see anything shaping up there. I am curious what Mary Ann was thinking about that second piece.

So I added some fake gold leaf and then sent these pieces back to her (dated 3/23/21 DG):

So when Mary Ann received the pieces, I think she thought….the progress is too slow for my tastes so she sent me an email and asked if she should go big…and I said Please, Go Big.

This is what I received back from her (dated 3/29/21 MAL).

Ok, she did go big. In a variety of ways. I loved the tree looking down at the ghosts, in the first piece. And she turned the curves and lines piece vertical and added a few small items of color…and eye and and a sandal she said. I loved the pieces. She kickstarted them.

So I touched up the Ghosts and the Tree piece…and thought that was finished. But I saw a woman in the curves and straight lines piece so I added arms, hair and a nose to the body…and called that one complete too.

Here are the final pieces in this round of Airmail Art Project #2 (a, b (dated 4/8/21 DG) and c (dated 4/8/21 DG):

Black and Blue and Red
The Tree and the Ghosts
Woman

This was a lot of fun. Mary Ann’s turn to start Airmail Art Project #3.
